Unsent letter examples

Words you may recognize as your own.

Read a few examples of letters never sent. Use them for inspiration, then write your own in the way that feels safest for you.

An unsent letter does not need to be perfect. It only needs to be honest. These examples are short, fictional starting points written to show the different shapes an unfinished conversation can take.

An unsent letter to an ex

“I keep almost texting you when something funny happens. Then I remember, and it stops being funny. I do not think reaching out would help either of us, but I needed somewhere to admit that I still miss the ordinary parts.”

An unsent letter to a parent

“I do not know how to explain what silence felt like in our house. Not peaceful silence. The kind that meant something was wrong and I was supposed to figure out what. I am still trying to unlearn that.”

An unsent letter to someone who passed away

“I still save little stories for you without thinking. I will reach for my phone, remember there is nowhere to send them, and feel the whole day change shape. I hope somehow love still counts when it has nowhere obvious to go.”

An unsent letter to a childhood friend

“There was no big fight. Life simply kept moving until we became people who used to know each other. I am grateful for the years when your house felt like a second home, and I hope life has been gentle with you.”

An unsent letter to your younger self

“You are going to survive the things you are convinced will destroy you. I will not pretend none of it hurts. But you make it through, and one day you stop blaming yourself for not knowing then what you know now.”

A short unsent goodbye text

“I meant what I said when I told you I cared. I also mean it when I say I cannot keep returning to something that keeps breaking me. Goodbye.”
